Plastikard – a user’s guide
Plastikard is a sheet polystyrene material specially selected for model making. The matt finish makes it possible to mark out parts prior to cutting and provides an ideal surface for paint. The soft nature of the surface makes cutting and scoring easy.
Cutting
Plastikard should not be cut with a knife as the resulting pieces tend to distort. It is better to make one firm cut with a sharp knife guided along a steel straight edge, then carefully snap the plastikard along the desired cut. Plastikard can be sawn with a piercing saw but it is time consuming, removes the thickness of the blade and the resulting cut edge needs smoothing.
Fixing
We recommend the use of a liquid polystyrene solvent such MEK-PAK or Plastic Weld. Capillary action takes the solvent along the joint, at the same time, any excess rapidly evaporates. (This is applied with a fine paint brush and is easily welded together).
